A few miles of Portimão, you can find Alcalar where, about 5000 years ago, an important prehistoric community settled in.
Here it was established a village defended by walls, trenches and slopes, where houses were built, whom had built next to it an important group of funerary tombs.
The traces there found allow us to be closer to their lifestyle, their activities, their use and occupation of that site and also their relationship with death, shown on the various constructive types of the di_erent kinds, from the common grave to the ones specially meant for the leaders and their relatives.
Found and explored since the late 19th century, the megalithic monuments of Alcalar are classied as National Monuments.
In Alcalar, two of those monuments are open to the public, allowing a direct contact with the processes and materials used in their construction.
As complement to Alcalar’s megalithic monuments visit, we suggest that you go to the Museum of Portimão to closely observe some of the objects found on the dierent monuments and on the settlement, therefore getting a better idea of the cultural legacy left by this millenary community.
